Saturday Ride to Mexico for Lunch

Destination: Crosby's in Ciudad Acuna across from Del Rio, Texas.
Meet at: Super 8 Motel Parking lot at 8:00 AM
Departing Time: 8:15 AM

Long before George Strait mentioned 'ma Crosby's in his hit song Blame it on Mexico, Crosby's served its famous Margaritas when cars were just beginning to gain popularity. Photographs from previous decades line the walls and mariachis stroll around making this restaurant one of the most tranditional and authentic sites in Ciudad Acuna. The menu is International and the food is quite good. A word to the wise, though. Please do not attempt to drink two margaritas.

We will cross the border on the bikes unless you choose to park it on the US side of the border. There is no charge for parking at Crosby's and management has been notified and is expecting us for lunch. This is an all day ride of about 400 miles. We expect to be back in Fredericksburg by 5 or so to relax and then head over to check out the bats for Bat Night.

Regarding the border crossing, we advise that your bring along your passport or birth certificate in addition to your driver's license in order to get back in the country. This is often not necessary, but it is up to the US Border Control officials as to how strict they want to be. It's better to be safe than sorry these days.

Other Saturday Rides

Saturday's rides are designed to give the participants the maximum opportunity to enjoy the Hill Country wild flowers which are found primarily north of Fredericksburg. The rides are not so long that everyone will have an opportunity to take pictures and enjoy the scenery and sweet smells.

There are three optional routes planned for Saturday which will end up at Cooper's Bar-B-Que in Llano for lunch. The traditional route will take you east to Blanco, Texas, and then west to Comfort, Texas, back to Fredericksburg for gas before a northwest loop to Llano and lunch at Cooper's. When you get to Llano you will need to turn left onto Texas 16. Ride across the Llano River Bridge north to the stoplight at Tx 29. Turn left and go about a quarter mile to Coopers. Return to Luckenbach via Texas 16, the longest state highway in Texas (it goes from the Red River to the Rio Grande). You can take the loop past Enchanted Rock State Park. A great road to ride, just watch out for the deer. Or you can go a few more miles south and take the Willow City Loop to look at the Bluebonnets. Be aware that, although not a long ride, the Willow Loop can take a long time due to the many sightseers like yourself who are taking this road to see the profusion of wild flowers. Be prepared for many low water crossings and cattle guards. This route with the swing by Enchanted Rock is 197 miles.

An optional route takes you straight south from Luckenbach in the opposite direction than you took on the poker run. The views and ride are much different between riding the road northbound vs southbound. Just past Sisterdale you turn to the east and wind around on country roads to Wimberly before turning north to work your way back to Johnson City. A short run up US 281 takes you to Round Mountain where you turn northwest to Llano and Coopers. Return to Fredericksburg is the same as on the traditional route. This route is about 215 miles.

For those who don't want to ride 215 miles there is a third route planned. Stay with either group until you hit US 281 either in or south of Blanco depending on the group you are in. Turn north onto US 281 and pass through Johnson City to Round Mountain where you turn northwest to Llano. This route with the second group is about 157 miles in length and a few miles shorter if you start out on the traditional route.

For those who don't feel like they got enough of the big roads south of I-10 on Friday we have posted two route maps that take you over a number of the roads that were not ridden during the poker run. Those who decide to go in this direction are on their own. There is gas and places to eat in Leakey, Camp Wood, Utopia, and Medina. Ride safe as there will be a lot of bikers out. Just remember that if you have an accident in this area it will be at least an hour before any medical assistance can get to you. SO, IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIMER TO THE HILL COUNTRY RUN, BE CAREFUL. WHEN THE SIGN SAYS 10 MPH CURVE, IT MEANS 10 MPH. YOU NEED TO STAY IN YOUR LANE ON ALL BLIND CURVES.
